The Narrow Way

There is a poem by American author, Robert Frost, entitled, God's Garden. I wanted to share it with you today because it's simple message has lately been on my mind. It brings to light the beauty of the narrow way back to our Heavenly Father and the careful confusion and distraction of the devil.

God's Garden
Robert Frost

God made a beauteous garden
With lovely flowers strown,
But one straight, narrow, pathway
That was not overgrown.
And to this beauteous garden
He brought mankind to live,
And said, "To you, my children,
These lovely flowers I give.
Prune ye my vines and fig trees,
With care my flowerets tend,
But keep the pathway open,
Your home is at the end."

Then came another master,
Who did not love mankind,
and planted on the pathway
Gold flowers for them to find.
And mankind saw the bright flowers,
That, glitt'ring in the sun,
Quite hid the thorns of av'rice
That poison blood and bone;
And far off many wandered,
And when life's night came on,
They still were seeking gold flowers,
Lost helpless and alone.

O, cease to heed the glamour
That blinds your foolish eyes,
Look upward to the glitter
Of stars in God's clear skies.
Their ways are pure and harmless
And will not lead astray,
But aid your erring footsteps
To keep the narrow way.
And when the sun shines brightly
Tend flowers that God has given
And keep the pathway open
That leads you on to heaven.

There are many times in scripture, particularly in the Book of Mormon, where the narrow path is defined as the path to eternal life with our Father in heaven, and his Son Jesus Christ. If we would obtain eternal life and true happiness, we must turn from all of the distractions of the adversary and feel the love that God has for us. He has sent His Son to help us. In the book of Jacob, Helaman, and 3Nephi, in the Book of Mormon there are verses that highlight the Narrow way.

"Oh then, my beloved brethren, repent ye, and enter in at the strait gate, and continue in the way which is narrow, until ye shall obtain eternal life."
                                                   Jacob 6:11

"Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked-"
                                                  Helaman 3:29

"And it came to pass that when Jesus had ended these sayings he said unto his disciples; Enter ye in at the strait gate; for strait is the gate, and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it; but wide is the gate, and broad the way which leads to death, and many there be that travel therein, until the night cometh, wherein no man can work."
                                                   3 Nephi 27: 33

I can testify that the way is narrow, but it is so very beautiful and full of joy. It is a way of peace, and love. It is also not easy. It is not easy because it is worth it. Jesus Christ paved the way. You will find Him on the strait path. He is in every joy and in every sorrow. He is the giver of every good gift; Even the gift of eternal life.

  1. God loves us and has a plan for us. The path is marked and our victory is sure if we believe in, and follow Jesus Christ. What a wonderful life we have with the right perspective.
