How Do I Stay Focused On the Right Message?

James 1:8 reads: "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." The ASL sign for “distracted” involves your head turning from side to side, as if you are trying to catch everything flying past you. This scripture makes me think of that – your head will be turned by every wind of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14). Because you are trying to see everything, you will lose the empowerment to focus on or do anything.

Similarly in the world, we are bombarded by conflicting messages. Because of this, many in the world choose to throw out the idea of an absolute truth. They think to themselves, "Whose to say what's right and what's wrong?" and never really develop a strong moral compass.

Fortunately, this is not the case: there is right and wrong. It is empowering. Because Heavenly Father gave us the gift to know good from evil and to choose, we can really make a difference in the world. We can live our lives with confidence. We can stand up for what we believe because we really can know that our lives are right.

Don't be obsessed with every new thing, but hold fast to the light and truth you already know. God gave you that knowledge and it is more precious than anything the world can teach you. Try to follow the virtue of openness as taught in the scriptures: that of having an open, humble, broken, teachable heart.

  1. Thanks for your article. I agree that we should hold fast to the truth. I am grateful to belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is the only church that contains a fullness of God's truth. We do, however, respect all religions, acknowledging that each of them has at least some truth.

  2. It's not trendy to believe that there is absolute truth, but that doesn't change the fact that there really is. The truths of the gospel are not to put other people or other religions down but to lift everyone up and to add more light, knowledge, and clarity to the world, not take it away. Everyone is born with the light of Christ and with humility and sincerity to know the truth, we can have truth manifested to us.
