What we know about the nature of the Godhead

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, "We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the holy Ghost." (first Article of Faith) These three beings make up the Godhead. They preside over this world and all other creations of our Father in Heaven.

The true doctrine of the Godhead was lost in the apostasy that followed the Savior's mortal ministry and the deaths of His Apostles. This doctrine began to be restored when 14-year old Joseph Smith received his First Vision. From the his account of that First Vision and from his other teachings, we know that the members of the Godhead are three separate beings. The Father and the Son have tangible bodies of flesh and bones, and the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit.

Although the members of the Godhead are distinct beings with distinct roles, they are one in purpose and doctrine. They are perfectly united in bringing to pass Heavenly Father's divine plan of salvation.

I know that Joseph Smith is a true prophet and that he did see our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. He talked with them, learned from them, and restored their true doctrine to the earth. I am grateful for his courage to ask a simple question and have faith he would receive an answer.

  1. It seems incredible that Joseph Smith saw God and His son Jesus Christ and I know that there are many who think that it is too incredible to have happened, but I want to add my testimony that it really did happen and the true gospel was restored to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. I would urge anyone who has doubts to read the Book of Mormon and the account of the First Vision and to sincerely pray to Heavenly Father to know if it is true and the Spirit will testify the truth of it to you.

  2. God is our Father and loves His children. He has given us an understanding of who we are, and what we need to do to return to Him. This is what a loving parent would do. I am thankful for this knowledge which has been revealed by the prophet Joseph Smith and for the blessings that come by living the gospel.

  3. The truth that Jesus is the Christ and that Joseph Smith was The Lord's true prophet here on Earth to restore His everlasting Gospel in our time is the fundamental doctrine of His church.

  4. It could be that part of the reason why God designed our church with a presidency consisting of a leader and two supporting counselors, is perhaps in part because it appears that this might just be an intentional pattern after the heavens, with Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost as counselors, if you will, to God our Father. At any rate, whether or not this similarity is an intended symbol probably matters less than the validity of Their oneness of purpose and the love that They, as Deities, provide us through Their sacred and distinct roles.
