Knowing the Godhead Can Strengthen Us

As the first article of faith states: “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” We believe that the Godhead is comprised of three separate individuals who are one in purpose and who all want to help us in our lives.

We also believe that we were created in the image and likeness of our Heavenly Father. In a talk about the Godhead given by President Gordon B. Hinckley he reads Genesis 1:26 which says “God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen. 1:26). President Hinckley goes on to explain: “Could any language be more explicit? Does it demean God, as some would have us believe, that man was created in His express image? Rather, it should stir within the heart of every man and woman a greater appreciation for himself or herself as a son or daughter of God”.

Knowing that we were created in the likeness of our Heavenly Father can help us to remember that as literal daughters and sons of Heavenly Father we have infinite worth and he loves us unconditionally. When we make a mistake Heavenly Father doesn’t stop loving us, but just wants to help us get back on track so that we can be happy. We have the other members of the Godhead— Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost— to also help us in our lives and to comfort us. Christ as our Savior literally suffered for every sin and sorrow that we will ever go through and we can gain strength and power in our lives through the Atonement. The Holy Ghost helps us by not only comforting us but the Holy Ghost also testifies to us of truth so that we can have guidance in our lives.

Gaining knowledge about the members of the Godhead can help us to know who we are and to know where we can go for help and support in our lives.

How has knowledge of the Godhead blessed your life?

  1. It is such a great comfort to me to know that we have a loving Father in Heaven. I know that He is there. I also know I have a Savior, Jesus Christ. He loves me and knows everything I feel. His Atonement gives me hope and the knowledge that I can live with my Savior and my Father in Heaven after this life. The Holy Ghost helps me feel of that love and knowledge that God lives and loves me. I am also grateful for the knowledge that my family is an eternal family. I will see them again! What a comfort that is to me!

  2. A brother of mine once mentioned that because we know our Heavenly Father is our Father and that we are His children, many confusing experiences can be made more clear. Sometimes we get angry or sad during trying times and when we pray or think of our Heavenly Father, we sound angry & sad. Many people who were angry over an event in their lives and were angry at God has since left their beliefs and faith. I think we sometimes leave because we are ashamed for being angry or we think, since we were mad at God, He no longer will guide & protect me. But when we view ourselves as God's children, we realize that we are still young in His eyes. When a two year old throws a tantrum, we, as parents, don't stop loving the child. We understand that in their limited way of expressing themselves, they are too overwhelmed and they need our love and attention the most. I believe that Heavenly Father is like that with us. We may throw our tantrums and be angry, but God never forsakes us. He loves us through our trials. He's waiting for us to turn towards Him again and feel His love for us.
Knowing that my Heavenly Father is there for me always, waiting for me to become better no matter where I was a minute ago, is so comforting. I have made many mistakes in my life and sometimes the only thing that keeps me going is knowing that despite my mistakes, my Heavenly Father loves me and that He has a plan for me. Enough so that He sent His only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to atone for my sins so I can repent and come unto Him again.

  3. It is really amazing to know that I am a literal son of my Heavenly Father and that I have infinite worth to him. This brings me comfort and I feel love from my Heavenly Father in knowing this. Also it brings less confusing knowing that there are 3 separate beings and that they each play a part in my life so significantly. The Holy Ghost will help me feel peace in this life and help me as a guide to make decisions. Jesus will also help me through trials because he has already gone through the suffering and pain that I will experience.

  4. Knowing that we are sons and daughters of God is the greatest motivation there is to live as well as we can. If we are God's children, it must mean that we have the ability to become like Him. What a blessing that as we better understand the Godhead, we are just motivated to become more like Him!
