Work and Self-Reliance

Work is honorable. Developing the capacity to work will help us contribute to the world in which we live. It will bring us an increased sense of self-worth. It will bless us and our families, both now and in the future.

We should set high goals for ourselves, and be willing to work hard to achieve them. Develop self-discipline, and be dependable. We should strive to do our best in our employment, schoolwork and other worthwhile pursuits. Our Father in Heaven has given us gifts and talents and knows what we are capable of achieving. If we seek His help and guidance as we work to achieve our goals, He will bless us.

Have you seen blessings from working hard to achieve your goals? How has our Father in Heaven helped you?

  1. Our work ethic is one of the few things we can control. Regardless of your natural abilities, our ability to work and achieve goals puts everyone back on equal ground. The satisfaction it brings that you were able to influence the outcome of your life, whether in school, work, even sports is an eternal principle. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be self reliant through hard work.

  2. While as a society we tend to complain about working, being able to work is actually a huge blessing and brings a lot of peace and self satisfaction. While hard work stretches us, it also brings a lot of happiness in this life and prepares us for eternity.

  3. From the time our children were little, my husband and I have taken this advice and taught them how to work. They had the responsibilities of working to earn money for their school clothes every year and any extras they wanted. They learned at an early age the value of what they had. It was hard at times and at times I wanted to step in and take care of everything! But we allowed them to learn the benefit of hard work. Today they are both amazing adults who understand the realities of life.

  4. My current employment has taught me to work hard at a greater level then I have yet experienced. I have embraced it as a blessing from God. As a result, my work ethic has increased in all areas of my life. Just as the Savior worked hard in his endeavors, we too must be diligent. Eternal life with God will be available to those who obtain the necessary ordinances starting with baptism, and who keep His commandments.
