Why are we commanded to keep the Sabbath day holy?

The Lord has given the Sabbath day for our benefit and has commanded us to keep it holy. Observing the Sabbath shows our commitment to honor and worship God and keep our promises to Him. It will bring us closer to the Lord and to our family. It will give us an eternal perspective and spiritual strength. The Sabbath also allows us to rest from our physical labors and worship the Lord.

How do you follow the commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy?

  1. Each Saturday, my husband and I stop and think about the activities we will do on Sunday--such as visiting family who lives 20 minutes away by car. We plan out what will be required to do such activities (do we need to do the dishes, laundry, grocery shopping or get gas in the car in order to do what we plan to for Sunday?). After we know what we need for Sunday, we plan ahead and get those items on Saturday so we wouldn't have to spend money on the Sabbath Day or do chores.

  2. What my family likes to do is rest. Yes this means naps after church. We also like to go out for walks. Life is so crazy for the rest of the week, that having a day set aside each week to relax a little and just enjoy each others company and remembering what a beautiful world we have been given is such a blessing

  3. On Sundays, I try to avoid things like recreation, work that is not spiritual in nature, and homework. I have plenty of time for those things from Monday through Saturday. It's nice to get a break from them and instead use the day for things like visiting with family, doing geneology, studying the gospel, and fulfilling church assignments.

  4. When I was younger, sometimes keeping the Sabbath day holy was difficult because I knew it meant not doing some of the things that I liked doing for a day. As I've gotten older I have come to really look forward to the Sabbath. It's so wonderful to have one day to completely focus on worshiping Heavenly Father and resting from the busy week with my husband.
