Study the Scriptures

The scriptures are written records of God's dealings with His children as recorded by prophets under the influence of the Holy Ghost. We show our faith by studying, believing, and obeying God's revealed word. We should diligently search the scriptures to understand the truth. We feast upon them because they open the door to revelation and show us what we need to do and become. We search the scriptures to learn about Jesus Christ and His gospel. Faith in Jesus Christ is a gift from God and comes through studying and living His word and His gospel. The approved scriptures of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also called the standard works, are the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. We strive to study these sacred books daily.

My faith grows as I study the scriptures. At times, it can be difficult to find the time on a busy day. But I know when I find that time and study the scriptures, I feel closer to my Father in Heaven and Jesus and I learn to recognize the blessing in my life.

  1. I have realized that the quality of scripture study is more important than the quantity of reading the scriptures. I have read chapters in a night and have fallen asleep the same as before reading--which is still better than not reading since it shows our faith in our scriptures--but I have felt the spirit more strongly when I read one verse that I sought after because of a question or trial in my life. I think if we use our scripture study as a time for learning and growth, we would want to take the time to read scriptures regardless if it means we have time to read one verse or one chapter.

  2. The scriptures are life-lines in a spiritually dangerous world. This is true by the thoughts their words promote, the feelings their messages invoke, and the choices they lead us to make. We could not go wrong by heeding their precepts, but we could go oh so wrong by not. This is the purpose for which they were intended, the reason for which they were written, the cause for which they stand. Is there any wonder as to why it is a commandment to read them everyday? Or a question as to the scope of resultant blessings for doing so?

  3. Not only am I blessed with direction from the Lord in my own life through scripture study, I also know my family is also blessed with added protection because family scripture study is a family priority.

  4. Reading the scriptures brings an actual tangible power into our lives. When I am reading my scriptures consistently I am always amazed with how much easier it is to deal with challenges in my life or to overcome personal obstacles. If you're having a hard time overcoming any personal challenge, I would counsel you to focus on studying your scriptures first, and then you will have the power from the spirit to change whatever else needs to be changed in your life.
