Family Home Evening

Family Home Evening or FHE is time set aside for our families.  We spend time with our families in order to develop a closer relationship with them.  It is also a time to learn about our Heavenly Father and about the gospel.
It is often hard to prioritize Family Home Evening over homework, "the game", dates, or other good and productive activities.  Sometimes it may be impossible to gather everyone together and spend an hour or two together a week.  Thomas S. Monson, our Prophet, said this,"We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program.  It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere.  The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."

For me, homework is what keeps me from setting time aside to have a Family Home Evening.  I can always justify and tell myself that I don't have time to do FHE because I wouldn't finish my homework if I do that.  But I know that things will workout if I just do what he asks. 1 Nephi 3:7  This short message from President Monson has inspired me to make it a priority to have a Family Home Evening with just me and my wife every week.  Whether it's going for a walk, or sharing a lesson from the scriptures, making an effort to spend time with our families will be a blessing to us all.

  1. This is something that I know I need to be better at, especially know that I have a young family and we want to instill these good habits. It will be difficult now that my husband is going back to school. Yet, I know that it is worth the time invested since it will provide the necessary framework for a stronger more faithful family and individuals. We will grow together as a family and learn about the gospel as a family.

  3. I love the wise counsel of our Church leaders to set aside time each week for our families. I always love knowing that however busy our lives are, Monday nights are family night! A night when we can come together and discuss gospel topics and also plan out our week and organize schedules. It's a time when we can regroup and spend some great quality time together as a family!

    1. I never thought about FHE as a time to not only discuss gospel topics but to also plan out our week and organize schedules. My family is only my husband and I and we are together most of the time. So it is hard to differentiate the difference between what we label as FHE on Mondays versus the other days of the week.
However, if I take the time with my husband to plan out the rest of the week, I know we will have better communication and more of a teamwork rather than doing what the other says to do.
Thank you for that great idea on what to include in FHE.

  5. Aimee and I have been including family history work in our family home evenings lately. It's been very enjoyable to learn about our ancestors and it's helped us to feel close not only to each other, but also to them.

  6. Family Home Evening is actually one of my favorite memories from growing up because with my dad working in another state a lot of the time and my siblings moved out of the house, it ended up being a really important and fun time for me and my mom to spend time together. Now that I'm married Family Home Evening has also been a huge blessing for my husband and I.
